(Over?) Reacting

This shooting at a liberal church in Knoxville makes me wonder what to do.

How do you balance openness and inclusion with safety and security? How do we even talk about it?

I've been thinking about your questions all night long... my first answer was to suggest carrying a gun everywhere you go * which I do, mostly because I have to * Then I thought about it some more and realized that is not the answer for everyone. Then I thought - why should I have to carry a gun to church? My answer was so that I can protect other people from something like this. There are more people out there like this than most people know about... More people that will keep showing up as our economy declines.

If the angry, unemployed, divorced guy keeps showing up to your meetings with a shotgun, it might be a good time to ask him to be your friend.... that may be all he needs.

The UU church has seemed awfully attractive lately, and that linked post is a powerful statement. On my next Sunday off, I might check out the UU church close to home.
